Combined organic carbon and complete nitrogen removal using anaerobic and aerobic upflow filters

Two laboratory upflow aerobic filters fed with synthetic wastewaters were used to study firstly the effects of aeration rate on the nitrification of anaerobically pre-treated effluents and secondly the effects of recycle-to-influent ratios on methane production rate, denitrification and nitrification performances of a combined aerobic and anaerobic wastewater treatment process. Nitrification of anaerobically pre-treated effluent was accompanied by aerobic post-treatment for residual COD removal. A comparison of nitrification performances using autotrophic medium and anaerobically pre-treated effluents (containing 1203 mg COD l(-1)) with the same ammonia nitrogen concentration of about 300 mg NH4-N l(-1) showed that 3% of added ammonia nitrogen was assimilated by autotrophic nitrifiers during nitrification of the autotrophic medium while up to 30% was assimilated by both nitrifiers and heterotrophs during organic carbon removal and nitrification of anaerobically pre-treated effluent. Further, it was suspected that significant nitrogen loss through denitrification occured in the aerobic filter especially at low aeration rates. In the study of the combined aerobic-anaerobic system, maximum ammonia nitrogen removal of 70% through denitrification was obtained at recycle-to-influents ratios of 4 and 5. COD removal efficiency in the anaerobic filter decreased from 77 to 60% for recycle-to-influents ratios of zero to 5. Overall COD removal efficiency of the entire system was constant at about 99% due to heterotrophic COD removal in the aerobic filter. / Deux filtres aérobie de laboratoire à courant inverse alimentés en eaux usées synthétiques ont été utilisés pour étudier premièrement les effets du taux d'aération sur la nitrification des effluents prétraités en anaérobie et deuxièmement les effets des taux recyclage-débits d'entrée sur le taux de production du méthane, les performances de dénitrification et de nitrification d'un procédé de traitement des eaux usées anaérobies et aérobies combiné. La nitrification des effluents prétraités de façon anaérobie était accompagnée d'un post-traitement aérobie pour l'élimination de la DCO résiduelle. Une comparaison des performances de nitrification en utilisant un milieu autotrophique et des effluents prétraités de façon anaérobie (contenant 1203 mg de DCO1(-1)) avec la même concentration en azote d'ammonium de 300 mg de NH4-N1(-1) a montré que 3 % d'azote d'ammonium était assimilé par des nitrificateurs autotrophiques pendant la nitrification du milieu autotrophique tandis que près de 30 % était assimilé par les nitrificateurs et les hétérotrophes pendant l'enlèvement du carbone organique et la nitrification des effluents pré-traités de façon anaérobie. En outre, on supposait qu'une perte d'azote significative par dénitrification se produisait dans le filtre aérobie notamment quand le taux d'aération était faible. Dans l'étude du système combiné aérobie-anaérobie, l'élimination maximale de 70 % de l'azote d'ammonium par dénitrification a été obtenue à des taux de recyclage-débits d'entrée de 4 et 5. L'efficacité de l'élimination de la DCO dans le filtre anaérobie est tombée de 77 à 60 % pour les taux de recyclage-débits d'entrée de zéro à 5. De manière générale, l'efficacité de l'élimination de la DCO du système entier était constante à environ 99 % en raison de l'élimination hétérotrophique de la DCO dans le filtre aérobie.
