Description
The growth in length of the two European anglerfishes (Lophius piscatorius and L. budegassa ) was studied from samples collected in ICES areas VII and VIII during 1984. Because of the difficulty on otoliths reading, a method based on illicium sections was developed. Moreover, morphological features of the sections can be useful in separating the two species. The location of winter rings was measured; length-frequency analysis and backcalculation was used as a first attempt to validate direct ageing.
