Description
This document is created within the framework of IFREMER's programme, "Information system, economy and diagnostics of the exploitation and evolution of resources". This programme brings together projects that have ambitions specific to each. The "Halieutic Information System" (SIH) has as its goal to build the observation network of halieutic resources and associated uses. It is mainly in charge of developing indicators about fishing fleets and their output in the form of summaries to the various actors in the fishing industry (from research to professionals and managers) and the public. This type of output is created thanks to the implementation of a standard methodology of monitoring the activities of ships, and to the existence since 2001 of a network of IFREMER researchers supplemented by subcontractor associates. Membership in professional committees, receiving the sailors who were surveyed and working together with the Department of Maritime Fishing and Aquafarming are, moreover, priceless in bringing this project to fruition. In the context of this network of observation, as done every year, the annual activity calendars of all ships of the North Sea/English Channel/Atlantic and of the Mediterranean (Corsica excepted), registered for the National Fleet on 31 December 2005 were brought back together for the year 2005, based on the self-assessed flow (log books, fishing sheet and auction data) when it exists, and via direct surveys with the owners of these ships and their professional representatives. This exhaustive collection of information makes it possible to build the "Activity" database containing, for each ship, the various trades practised during the year, and adding up the number of months*ship of activity per trade and, if applicable, the periods of inactivity. By "trade", we mean the use of a fishing device in order to catch one or several target species in a given fishing area. This document is an early processing of the data from the "Activity" database collected over the benchmark year 2005, and does not claim to give an account of the entire data collected. The indicators presented below are a photograph of the fleet.
