Description
To begin with, it seems necessary to recall the reason why we tried to find new fishing areas in Greenland after the failure of three French trawlers in 1925, and with in mind the quasi-certainty of finding a satisfactory compensation for the lack of fishes on the Newfoundland Bank in the summer. 1927 had been the first year of shortage observed since 1922, date of the first oceanographic studies conducted by the Fisheries Office in Newfoundland. Comparing the previous hydrological results with ours, we reached the conclusion that 1927 had shown a drop in the polar flow and a major hot transgression with an inflow of real Atlantic water of more than 35 [?] on the Great Bank. We concluded that the old saying: "cold year, cod year", corresponding to the results of M. Le Danois, in 1922 and 1923, was the popular interpretation of an experimented fact, and meant that the abundance or the rarity of fishes was linked to some meteorological conditions whose cold or hot periodic character, resulted by repercussion, in the increasing or diminution of the continental water inflow in Newfoundland.
