Description
Introduction:
Monocellular planktonic algae are autotrophic organisms. They represent the starting point of the food chain and are the first link in primary production.
They can be found in high density in a natural environment at Springtime and Fall, times at which temperature and salinity conditions are right for their development and when adequate mineral salts availability is high.
This alga production meets bivalve and Penaeid's larva nutritional needs. It also promotes the development of rotifer cultures. Selecting which species to exploit is done according to nutritional value, size, and ease of growing.
Algal cell sizes vary between 2 to 100 microns. There are numerous families which are determined according to different criteria:
- Nature of the membrane,
- Flagella distribution,
- Cell characteristics, etc.
