Description
This report is the first stage of the Inventory of Potential Sites for Aquafarming along the Côtes-du-Nord shoreline. This type of inventory was conducted previously in Seine-Maritime, in Basse-Normandie, in Finistère, and along the central part of the Atlantic coast.
This kind of study is generally motivated by two findings:
-the growing use of the shoreline area for various activities
-the need to set aside suitable sites for the development of aquafarming.
In order to make consistent development choices, it is important to know as well as possible the aquafarming potential sites that we have available, their size, their nature, their geographic distribution, as well as the state of the techniques to be implemented.
In Brittany itself, a quick inventory of the sites had already been drawn up in 1972 by CNEXO. It pointed out about twenty interesting sites, distributed along the shoreline from Cancale to the Gulf of Morbihan. Since its appearance, farming techniques have changed, particularly floating cage farming. Within the current scope of urban planning documentation and the National Directive Programme of Aquafarming and Shellfish Farming, a reserving the sites and preserving their environment is more easily imagined over areas of a certain expanse. A more detailed investigation and more data seemed necessary.
Regional Public Agency of Brittany and the Regional Councils of Côtes-du-Nord, Finistère, and Morbihan requested the formation of such an inventory by département. The first-phase work presented here was begun in August 1978. This work is the result of a dual approach:
-research, in the field, of the sites that may be a good fit,
-desk research summarising the information that exists about the natural and socio-economic environment, from the perspective of aquafarming use of the shoreline.
