Description
The material studied in this work was collected by the Institute of Marine Fisheries' oceanographic vessel "Thalassa" during two cruises carried out between July and August 1961, on the Big Bank of Newfoundland and on the banks of Nova Scotia, for the first one and between July and September 1962, on the same banks and in the Gulf of Maine, for the second one. Some Euphausiids were collected from 53 stations whose characteristics are attached and that can be divided into three groups corresponding to three distinct geographical regions between which two channels (Laurentian channel and Fundy channel) enable the inflow of off-shore waters (fig. 1). The first group relates to the Gulf of Maine and the Georges Bank, the second group made of samples from both cruises links, around the banks of Nova Scotia, the first and third group, while this latter relates to the edge of the Big Bank of Newfoundland. This network of stations covers a region spanning between 47" and 71" longitude W, and enables the comparison between the "hot" ensemble subjected to the influence of the Gulf Stream to the "cold" ensemble subjected to that of the Labrador current.
