Description
For a few years, we have witnessed the rapid development of Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum (Adams & Reeve) culture on the Atlantic coast, and especially in the Charente Maritime region. However, a number of unknown variables still exist in order to optimize oyster farms and improve their benefits. In this respect, studies have been carried out since 1975 by the Centre Océanologique de Bretagne in Tudy Island, in the Kermoor pond, in order to determine: the consequence of the immersion size on their growth, the optimal seeding period, and the survival rate. Moreover, other studies aimed to significantly reduce the production cost, focused on pre-growth length. These studies correspond to a specific environment (i.e. the semi-closed Kermoor pond). The next step will be to extend and solve similar problems in other environments such as oyster ponds, very numerous in the Charente Maritime region, and more and more exploited.
