Description
The Saint-Pierre or John Dory (Zeus faber L.) abounds on the West coast of Africa. Its presence in the waters of Madeira has been noticed as early as 1837 by Lowe (2); in the Canaries in 1844, by Valenciennes (4), and later by Steindachner (6), then Vinciguerra (8). It has been observed as far as the Azores (cf. Fowler (25), p. 1 262). In 1906 Pietschmann (11) reported its presence on the Moroccan coast (Mogador, Agadir. Azamor). Between the White Cape and Dakar, Gruvel and Bouyat (1906.10) reported that local fishermen trawl fish the "rose or poisson de Saint-Pierre (Zeus faber)". Pellegrin (1907.12) observed it in Rufisque and Dakar. Studying the area located between Saint-Louis and Bissao, the professor Gruvel (1908,13) reports the presence on the rocky and ascidian limestone bottoms of different species like the gurnard, the goatfish, the scorpionfish, the Saint-Pierre (Zeus faber) and the crayfish.
