Description
Engraulis encrasicholus L. is a species that is captured all year long off the coasts of Algeria. The studied specimens measured from 8 to 19 cm. The average total length is 14 cm. Throughout the year, the average monthly size does not vary (12.6 to 14.7 cm for the entire species, 12.4 to 15.6 cm for bottom anchovies; the difference is greater for surface anchovies: 9 to 15 cm). During summer, the average is the highest and the most constant. Sizes have different modes during winter and spring. Average lengths are greater than those of the Atlantic specimens. This can be explained by the fact that the continental margin is narrower in the Mediterranean Sea, so that anchovies can find trophic areas closer to the shore (J. FURNESTlN, 1950)....
