Description
Extensive lagoon farming, a traditional activity in various European and Mediterranean countries, represents a production of some 10,000 tons/year. It depends on a variety of social, technical and biological factors, which do not easily meet nowaday. It basically implies a management of the lagoon restricted to the benefit of a few people, an investment and a,financial return per hectare rather low, in an exploitation entirely based upon a supply of wild fry from the open sea. The author analyses under what conditions the present improvements in the control of fry production for some species could bring new prospects for the development of that activity and possibly open the way to restocking programs in the open sea.
