Description
This document is the progress report, for the third year, of the research programme "Scenarios for Development of Fishing Activity in the Breton Coastal Strip". Co-financed by the Brittany Region within the framework of the XII State/Regional Planning Contract, this programme teams up scientific partners from IFREMER, ENSAR, and UBO (CEDEM).
This report is made up of two parts:
- The first part is dedicated to the synthesis of the fisheries of Mor Braz. It was a matter of approaching the whole of Mor Braz with the methodology used for the study of customs, resources and space in the Gulf of Morbihan. Following the presentation of fishing activities, the first results on the economic situation of the fleets are explained.
- The second part is a legal and economic study. The legal study focuses on the institutional framework within which management of coastal fishing lies. The economic study strives to compose a panel of ships based on the databases from the Regional Economic Research Panel on Fishing (OERP) of Brittany. These ships are then classified by type by means of the "IFREMER typology" of the Breton fleet introduced in the progress report of the year 2002.
This study is the result of collaborations between the research project's partners. The synthesis on the fisheries of Mor Braz was led jointly by IFREMER and Agrocampus Rennes (ENSAR). The contribution of the legal analysis considerably enriches the traditional biological and economic approach to coastal fishing. Finally, the definition of homogeneous fleets will make it possible to connect the economic results obtained on the one hand by CEDEM from OERP, and on the other hand by IFREMER by means of economic surveys.
