Description
After a period of high growth in the 1970s and the early 1980s up until 1985-a record year with 838 000 tonnes (FAO data)-, landings are now on the decline and did not total more than 750 000 tonnes in 1988. Production in continental waters represents one-fourth of total production. States in southern Brazil provide three-fourths of landings but only half of their value because the states in the north-east (Nordeste) compensate the relatively low volume of their catches with the high market value of the fished species. Industrial fishing represents 60% of landings and is particularly developed in the south while, in the Nordeste, artisanal fishing prevails (40% of landings) and is most often done using non-motorised vessels. The main obstacles to fisheries development are the weak fish processing and distribution systems and the lack of training in new fishing techniques or in product preservation for fishers.
