Description
This study is a complement to a previous study on the use of spatialised data for the optimisation of the surveillance of coastal waters in the Mediterranean within the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). This fisrt study aimed at characterising the ecological status of the coastal water masses through surface chlorophyll-A concentrations (Chl-A) derived from satellite imagery. The present study is focused on 3 main topics (i) a complementary characterisation of coastal waters with Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) derived from satellite imagery; (ii) a hydrodynamic characterisation of the coastal waters based on outputs from the MARS-3D hydrodynamic model of Ifremer, by computation of the rate of renewal of the waters in each individual water mass defined for the WFD, thus giving an indication of their potential of dilution and therefore their sensitivity to possible contaminations (iii) a spatial analysis on satellite derived Chl-A data aiming at evaluating the representativity of sampling points in a water mass. Results are mainly provided within cartographic Atlases, one for each of the 3 considered topics.
