Observations d'un photophore maxillaire (MXO), nouveau pour les searsiidae (Pisces, clupeiformes), chez Sagamichthys Schnakenbecki (Krefft, 1973)

Out of two specimens of Sagamichthys schnakenbecki (Kreff, 1973) (pisces, Clupeiformes, Searsiidae), measuring 112 and 142 mm L.st., caught with a high-opening trawl during the 1973 Rockall-Faeroe campaign of the "N.O. Thalassa" (station Z 55, 24.05.1973, 56 0 43'N 16 0 16'W, 780 m deep), we observed an unreported photophore in this fish family. It is a long mass of luminous tissue with a pretty irregular outline, orientated more or less sideways on to the edge of the mandible (fig. 1). This photophore is located on the posterior external side of this bone roughly where the edges of the two supramaxillas cover up. We named it maxilla organ (organe maxillaire) and gave it the following abbreviation MXO. (unverified OCR)
