Description
This report reviews the current knowledge about biogeochemistry, biodegradation and ecotoxicology in the aquatic environment of two families of surfactants: the LAS (linear alkylbenzene sulfonates) and APE (alkylphenols ethoxylates). The analytical methods are described. Data are given on concentration levels in sewage. effluents, in freshwaters, in marine waters and in sediments. Datas are also given on biodegradation rates; biochemical pathways and explained. Finally, concentrations levels bringing about acute and chronic toxic effects are given. The conclusion contains some recommendations about some aspects of the environmental fate of LAS and APE which must be further investigated.
