Description
Trout and salmon market is one of the major markets for fish in France. The domestic production covers the demand for trout and it is very stable (30.000 tons) after a rapid expansion during the early eighties. With the rapid expansion of the world production, the price for salmon has been steadily decreasing since 1986. The French market for salmon depends completely on imports. The quantity imported increases more rapidly than the drop of the price. Salmon import is the main cause for the deficit of the trade of seaproducts in France. Salmon production is not likely to expand significantly during the coming years. The troutproduction sector seems to be at the point where the commercial benefits (quality control, trade scale economies, promotion...) may be superior to the productivity improvement. Quality control, promotion and diversification of products are also a key issue to support the salmon price. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]
