Description
This inventory of sites favourable for aquaculture on the coasts of Brittany involves the joint goal of the French National Centre for the Exploitation of the Oceans (CNEXO) and the Brittany Region that aims to reserve certain sites to install the structures necessary for aquaculture. The CNEXO continues its efforts, initiated several years ago, to promote aquaculture on French coasts. The Brittany prefecture was the first to request this type of study and wishes to integrate aquaculture as part of coastal spatial planning. The Aquitaine prefecture has since then also requested a similar study that is now in progress. Aquaculture in France is now in a transition period between an experimental phase and the industrial-scale implementation phase. A certain number of techniques have been developed. On the medium-term, these techniques should allow for high production of various species, including shrimp, salmonids, breams, bass, flatfish, etc. To facilitate the transition from pilot projects to operational farming units, aquaculture must find suitable areas to establish operations. A certain number of favourable sites raise conflicts between aquaculture and other more traditional economic sectors. A few years ago, aquaculture suffered from a weak standing in these conflicts. Today, the situation has changed for the better with growing awareness as to the economic prospects that aquaculture represents.
