Description
In the Portuguese national economy, the role of the fishing industry is very important, although its contribution to GDP (Gross Domestic Product) is only about 1%. This sector employs 41,724 fishermen and more than 50,000 people for all activities associated with fishing. The volume of exports ensures a relatively large in-flow of foreign currency. It must be emphasized that the fishing sector is the main supplier of raw materials for the conversion industries. Fish products supply up to 40% of the animal proteins meant for human consumption. Portugal is the leading consumer of seafood in Europe: 35 kg per inhabitant per year. Up until 1971 and for the period of 1978-1980, the trade balance of seafood was positive with an annual average of 168 MF from 1965 to 1970 and an annual average of 98 MF from 1978 to 1980.
