Les exploitations ostréicoles de Bretagne-Nord

This study began in the Marennes-Oléron Bay. It was conducted by natural scientists in conjunction with social scientists. The first objective of this research contract was to study the integration of as well as the strategies developed by Charente oyster farmers hosted in northern Brittany. After an initial visit to farms in Brittany, we noted that oyster farms were extremely diverse in this region and that there were no studies that related a global view of oyster culture in northern Brittany. This gap in our knowledge was an obstacle to any overview, and more so for any interpretation, of the real state of affairs. This study will thus be above all descriptive. In the first part of this report, details on the survey and the situation will be given. The second part of this report will address the criteria for differentiating the professionals through a study of the structure of oyster farm operations. The third part of this report will portray oyster farmers and conclude with the construction of a classification scheme of oyster farm operations.
