Description
The phytocoenological method, which consists in defining the elementary units of vegetation, appears to be the best one for the choice of the parts of the sea-shore to be protected. Based on a list of associations in a given site, it provides an expression of the diversity of the flora in the littoral environment, which is a better criterion than the presence of endemic or rare species. Examples are given for cliffs and dunes on the Atlantic coasts of France (Tables 1 and 2). This method, however, can be used by good specialists only.
