Description
The breaking of waves is probably the most spectacular phenomenon linked to sea swell for the average coastal walker, even if he does not know anything about the mechanisms involved. For the oceanographer, it is a hydrodynamic non-linear, non-stationary phenomenon, which depends on the bottom slope and on the nature of the offshore swell. For the engineer, it is a source of destructive forces (evaluated in tens, if not hundreds of tonnes per square metre of building) which has to be anticipated and mastered.
