The measuring instruments for shipping physical capacities and fin ancial flows recorded by the maritime carriers activities are in full development. The "French Merchant Shipping High Council" (CSMM) has devoted to this matter a day worhshop, which, in spite of its austerity, allowed animated talks. Mr. Thébaud & Mr. Wessels have thus been able, through "ULCC'''s example, to show the importance of reliable economic indexes. Mrs. Jarnois & M. Lille have shown the special interest attached to the modernization of "Shipping National Expenses" concept. At last, the result of the research conducted by a CSMM working group about currently available maritime indexes in Europe are set out. Their relevance and their inadequacies are brought to light.
