Description
During the Polymede II cruise conducted by the R.S. "Jean-Charcot" and organized by the Scientifc department of the C.O.B., two sectors of the Ionian Sea have been the focus of a biological study of the benthic populations: the abyssal plain of Messine (abyssal being used here in its topographic meaning, that is to say a central basin away from the coast), and the Matapan South trench, to the south-west of the Peloponnesus. Samples were taken using an epibenthic drag with an automatic closing system enabling the catch of pelagic animals during the haulback and the loss of benthic samples.
