Diatoms of Mayotte. The benthic flora of watercourses

This iconographic guide accompanies the guide for the implementation of the Mayotte diatom indices, IDMsp and IDM trait (Vasselon et al. 2019), used as part of the monitoring of the biological quality of watercourses, in the application of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). It illustrates the taxa that need to be identified at the specific level for the calculation of the IDMsp (cf. Vasselon et al. 2019, appendix 1), while the calculation of the IDM trait only requires identification at the genus level. Light microscopy photographs are accompanied by scanning electron microscopy images for some taxa. Populations of certain species or closely related species found on other French Indo-Pacific islands are also illustrated for comparison and to help refine taxonomic determinations. This book is intended above all as a practical tool, but also as a reference document guaranteeing the rigorous application of diatom indices in Mayotte. It is intended for qualified operators and is not a substitute for advanced training in diatom taxonomy.
