Description
Structural studies were conducted on spawned oocytes of Pecten maximus in order to reveal some characteristics related to their quality. Depending on their ultrastructural configuration three types of oocytes were considered: oocytes of normal appearance, immature and atretic surmature. Histological examination shows a strong variability in lipid content inside and between spawnings which has been quantified by image analysis. A lipid index was defined. 65% of 40 spawings can be regarded as homogeneous. H atching success is partly explained by the quantity of lipids in the gametes. The presence of abnormal larvae after 2 days can be related to the low values of the lipid index.
